What great timing for our Newcomer program for February 9th. We will welcome Dawn Betz, fondly and professionally known as "The Plant Lady!" If you have had similar experiences to many of us Newcomers of trying and failing to select plants that love Wilmington, NC instead of a northern backyard, you will be excited about Dawn's information, knowledge and samples of what to grow in our new environment.

We will have our luncheon after the meeting at Cafe Phoenix on Front Street. There will be a preset menu from which you can choose. There will be a sign up sheet at the meeting, and all guests are welcome to join us.

A big thank you to our January hostesses Julie Jenkins and LianaGiaimo. We appreciate your willingness to welcome our visitors.

The Wilmington Newcomers Club would love to have you join us ! The club is open to adults who have moved to the Wilmington area within the past 4 years. Joining the Wilmington Newcomers Club is easy. For more information, please click on the following link to our New Member Registration Form .

We meet monthly at 9:30 am on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Coastline Convention Center 501 Nutt Street in Downtown Wilmington. To see a map click here. While sipping a cup of tea or coffee you can enjoy an interesting program. Then you can sign up for our satellite groups which are our main thrust. We have many special interest groups where members can follow their particular interest and make new friends along the way. They are as diverse as bridge clubs, dinner groups, business networking groups, book clubs, movies and lunch, garden clubs and day trip groups. Many members are also active in the numerous Community Service groups in town.

Wilmington has many wonderful and worthwhile non-profit organizations. The Newcomers Club is fortunate to be able to award several mini-grants to a select number of these organizations for the second year in a row. Any member may nominate an organization she feels contributes to enriching or improving our Wilmington community. To give consideration to a broad spectrum of our geographic Wilmington area, we depend on all of our members' involvement. It may be an organization where you volunteer. It may be an organization that has helped someone you know. It may be a cause you believe in or an organization affiliated with one you have been involved with in the past for yourself or a loved one. We encourage each member to help us to identify organizations that will use this grant for a specific project to help our community.

The 5 organizations that were selected by the WNC Board as the recipients of the 2011-2012 mini grants from the Wilmington Newcomers Club are: Cape Fear Clinic Inc., DREAMS of Wilmington, Canines For Service, The Phoenix Employment Ministry, and Sharing Our Bounty.

Check out our "virtual" bulletin board! We use it to publicize events of other organizations our members support. To access it, just click on the top tab of the newsletter marked "WHAT'S UP?". We'd like it to become the "go-to" place for information on what's going on around town! Members who would like to post an announcement should submit it to mjwrynn@gmail.com in final copy form. Submissions should be made at least a month in advance and pertain only to activities involving bona fide non-profit organizations. All entries will be presented to the Board for approval before publication. The Board reserves the right to reject proposals they find inappropriate for the website. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jo Wrynn at the email address above.

We look forward to hearing from you!!
